Nick Furi's Odds & Ends Banner 2013 Final

The Simpsons – After making a splash with the “real” version of Ellen’s Oscar Selfie, seems Simpsons’ creator Matt Groening couldn’t stop himself from spoiling the “true” identity of the Yellow King– arch-nemesis of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in HBO’s True Detective. Sorry in advance.

Digital Comics – Remember when you first heard digital comics were the future of the medium? Too bad no one ever mentioned or warned you about the possibility of someone stealing some of your personal information from the sites you buy you digital comics from. And that’s exactly what happened over at Comixology. Sure it was only some passwords and shit– but it could of been worse. It always can be. Do yourselves a favor and just buy REAL comics from your local comic shop. No one is impressed with you reading comics on your iPad or your Android phone, hipster doofuses. [Kotaku]

FCC Fines – The FCC has proposed a $1.9 million fine against Viacom, NBC Universal and ESPN for airing a trailer of Olympus Has Fallen featuring the real Emergency Alert System tone. Normally, I’d just tell the FCC to go fuck themselves– as their fines and morals are completely unbalanced… But I do understand the tone is supposed to be used during emergencies only. That said, $1.9 million? Are they insane? You’d think someone had exposed their nipple during Super Bowl Halftime or something. [Variety]

Movie Debates – Director Zack Snyder is an asshat. In an interview, producer Joel Silver (set to originally produce the Watchmen film), stated he thought Terry Gilliam’s film version of the comic would’ve been much better. Snyder promptly responded, saying he “…made [Watchmen] to save it from the Terry Gilliams of this world.” I actually enjoyed Snyder’s Watchmen, but Gilliam’s ideas sound pretty interesting too. To his credit, the Monty Python member didn’t take the bait and bother to respond. Who’s the better man now, Snyder? [Cinema Blend]

Collectibles – I stopped watching Dragon Ball Z in the middle of the Majin Buu Saga. A terrible admission, I know… I haven’t lived down the shame yet. And I really wish I wouldn’t have– because some of the coolest characters and designs of the show came during that arc. But wait! Now I can get these great characters in toy form. That helps make for my earlier indiscretion… Right? [Tomopop]

Television – I guess my complaining worked! FOX has finally announced their Batman-related TV Pilot Gotham will include a young Bruce Wayne– played by Touch star David Mazouz. I should be able to stop complaining about Gotham casting now that the majority, if not all, of the main cast has been announced… Oh wait… Actress Camren Bicondova was also cast as Selina Kyle. Maybe now I can stop. [Deadline]

Web Comics – I have grown fond of web comics over the last year. (Editors Note: Web comics are completely different from regular print comics in digital form.) I really enjoy how anyone can create them and expose their ideas to the world. I have a new appreciation for digital content too. I rarely buy hard copies anymore– except my monthly floppies. If you’re hesitant to try web comics, io9 has found 17 cool comics which have finished their run– and they’re all free! The list has something for everyone: Horror, comedy, sci-fi, etc. At that price, trying one won’t possibly hurt. [io9]

Music – I’m all for TV networks plugging and promoting their shows, but having a Game of Thrones rap song mix is going a bit too far. I don’t know how anyone thought this would be a good idea. It doesn’t connect to the show at all… I could maybe see a medieval themed album, but I cannot– and will not– get behind a Game of Thrones rap album. [Indie Wire]

Television – YAY! More Arrow stuff for me to obsess over. This trailer makes me extremely excited for the rest of the season… The show looks like it’s going to kick some serious ass!

Video Games – In case you didn’t know, there was a social experiment to see if a massive amount of people could collectively beat a video game. It took about 1 million players and 16 days to complete Pokemon Red/Blue. By typing in a command (A, B, Start, Select, up, down, left or right) the emulator would follow the action. I would never want to play Pokemon with that many people– it is already bad enough if you have a friend watching you… But if you want to participate, another experiment already underway with Pokemon Crystal. Let the mayhem begin! [Geeks Are Sexy]

Film – This Gwen and Peter featurette for Amazing Spider-Man 2 does make me care about Gwen– but I still don’t give a rat’s ass about Andrew Garfield’s Spidey. I will never be caught spending money on this movie– or the rest of this cynical franchise… At least not until Disney overpowers Sony and gets their character rights back. I want Spidey in the true Marvel Universe…. Though Spider-Man in the ACTUAL Marvel Comic Universe is equally shit– so maybe not. [Collider]

Manga – Who wants free (legal) digital manga? (I know I do!) Manga publisher Kadokawa is releasing an app called ComicWalker on March 22. There will be titles in Japanese, Chinese and English. Out of the 200 manga available on launch– around 40 will be translated into English, with more to arrive later. If you are skeptical about how many good titles they can offer, hopefully these series might put your mind at ease: Sgt. Frog, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Gundam – The Origin. This will be a great app to have once I move to a new place and start paying way too much in rent. [Anime News Network]

Collectibles – The  iconic stature of the one and only true film Superman, Christopher Reeve, is being turned into a premium format Sideshow collectible. If I were to own any Superman figure, bust or statue– I would make sure it had the iconic likeness of the wonderful Reeve. [Sideshow Collectibles]

Comics – Wherever the “Has DC done something stupid today?” counter is today, we better make sure it gets reset quick… Even if this news bit is an outcome of their earlier stupidity– not something recent. Get this: Former DC Publisher Paul Levitz is now a part of BOOM! Studios… Joining the publisher’s board of directors and becoming a consultant/adviser to the company. Popular comic writer Mark Waid defined the awesomeness of this move by tweeting, “EVERYTHING about comics just changed seismically.” It is incredibly fun watching other companies take advantage of DC’s mistakes. It really is. [Comics Alliance]

Television – If anyone is interested, here’s a complete 2014 Television Pilot Guide. While I like knowing what shows are being considered, it’ll be even more compelling to see how many shows from this massive list actually make the cut to actual series orders. Kevin Spacey’s argument that networks spend way too much money on pilot season could never be more clear.  [The Hollywood Reporter]

Fake Products – If I didn’t already know this was fake, I think I may have fallen for it. Damn it, Funny or Die! [Huvr Tech]
